| HOUSE RESOLUTION
|
| 2 |
| WHEREAS, The State of Illinois wishes to alert and educate |
| 3 |
| the citizens of this State of potential dangers in their |
| 4 |
| environment; and
|
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, Radon is a colorless, odorless, tasteless, and |
| 6 |
| chemically inert radioactive gas that is naturally produced |
| 7 |
| from the breakdown of uranium; this gas is present in soil, |
| 8 |
| rock, and water; and
|
| 9 |
| WHEREAS, The United States Surgeon General has warned that |
| 10 |
| radon is one of the leading causes of lung cancer in the United |
| 11 |
| States, second only to smoking; and
|
| 12 |
| WHEREAS, Unlike carbon monoxide and many other home |
| 13 |
| pollutants, radon's adverse health effect, lung cancer, is |
| 14 |
| usually not produced immediately; a person may be exposed to |
| 15 |
| radon for many years without ever suspecting its presence in |
| 16 |
| the home; and
|
| 17 |
| WHEREAS, Radon has been found in homes throughout Illinois, |
| 18 |
| particularly in central and northern Illinois; therefore, be it
|
| 19 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
| 20 |
| NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
| 21 |
| we urge the residents of Illinois to purchase a low-cost radon |
| 22 |
| test kit or contact a licensed radon contractor to test their |
| 23 |
| homes for radon concentrations; and be it further |
| 24 |
| RESOLVED, That we urge school districts to help protect |
| 25 |
| their students and employees by having every school tested for |
| 26 |
| radon; and be it further

| RESOLVED, That we urge licensed radon contractors and |
| 28 |
| residents who do self tests of their homes to report the |
