| HOUSE RESOLUTION
|
| 2 |
| WHEREAS, When a citizen, through the kindness of her heart, |
| 3 |
| offers one of her own organs to another, it is an action to be |
| 4 |
| commended; and
|
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, Patsy Donahue is a fourth grade teacher at |
| 6 |
| Oster-Oakview School in New Lenox School District 122; on |
| 7 |
| Monday, May 1, 2006, Ms. Donahue underwent an operation to |
| 8 |
| donate one of her healthy kidneys to Brandon Shafer, a fourth |
| 9 |
| grade student in her class; and
|
| 10 |
| WHEREAS, Ms. Donahue previously served in the Peace Corps |
| 11 |
| and began working in her first full-time teaching job this |
| 12 |
| year; she considers it "divine intervention" that brought her |
| 13 |
| home from the Peace Corps and found her as the teacher of young |
| 14 |
| Mr. Shafer; and
|
| 15 |
| WHEREAS, Mr. Shafer was diagnosed with polycystic kidney |
| 16 |
| disease two years ago, a disease that covers both the inside |
| 17 |
| and outside of the kidneys in cysts; as a result of his |
| 18 |
| illness, he took five medications a day, including shots that |
| 19 |
| he administered himself; his mother had volunteered one of her |
| 20 |
| kidneys, but was not a perfect match; Patsy Donahue's kidney |
| 21 |
| was; and
|
| 22 |
| WHEREAS, Ms. Donahue says that she donated the kidney |
| 23 |
| because her father was the recipient of a bone marrow donation; |
| 24 |
| therefore, be it

| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
| 26 |
| NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
| 27 |
| we recognize Patsy Donahue for the selfless act of the donation |
| 28 |
| of one of her healthy kidneys to Brandon Shafer, one of her |
| 29 |
| fourth grade students at Oster-Oakview School; and be it |
| 30 |
