HOUSE RESOLUTION


 
2
    WHEREAS, Eric D. Lee recently was named the recipient of 
3
the 2006 Community Service Award from Leo High School; and

 
4
    WHEREAS, Eric Dwayne Lee was born on October 11, 1963; he 
5
was first of four children of Bobby and Alma Lee; he graduated 
6
from St. Carthage Grammar school on Chicago's Southside in 1977 
7
and went on to Leo High School and graduated in 1981; and

 
8
    WHEREAS, Mr. Lee was an honors student at Leo High; he was 
9
active in basketball, track, and student government; he was the 
10
Vice President of the student body as a senior; he was known to 
11
his classmates as a genuine, caring individual that embodied 
12
the qualities of a true Leo Man, a leader, and a friend; and

 
13
    WHEREAS, After graduation, he enrolled at the University of 
14
Illinois, Chicago; he then answered the call of his country and 
15
joined the United States Marine Corps; he served four years in 
16
the Marines and was honorably discharged in 1987 after earning 
17
the rank of Corporal; and

 
18
    WHEREAS, In 1991, Mr. Lee answered the call to service 
19
again when he joined the Chicago Police Department and was 
20
assigned to the 2nd district as a patrolman; in June of 2000, 
21
he moved on to the 7th district as a member of the 
22
tactical/gang unit known as "The Englewood Rangers"; he was 
23
known as a hard working dedicated officer; and

 
24
    WHEREAS, In 1993, he married Shawn S. Tinelle and started a 
25
family; they were blessed with a daughter, Erica; he went back 
26
to school and graduated Summa Cum Laude from Chicago State 
27
University with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and had 
28
begun working on his master's degree; and

    WHEREAS, On August 19, 2001, Mr. Lee was on patrol with two

other officers; they spotted a man being beaten in an alley; 
2
when he and his fellow officers approached the scene and 
3
identified themselves as police, shots were fired, and he was 
4
killed in the line of duty; and

 
5
    WHEREAS, Officer Eric Dwayne Lee made the ultimate 
6
sacrifice for doing the right thing; he was dedicated to his 
7
family, friends, and community; he personified the Leo High 
8
School motto of Facta Non Verba; for those reasons and for the 
9
person he was, his classmates nominated him posthumously for 
10
the Community Service Award; therefore, be it

 
11
    RESOLVED, BY THE  HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
12
NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 
13
we recognize the sacrifice of Mr. Eric D. Lee, a fitting 
14
recipient of the 2006 Community Service Award from Leo High 
15
School; and be it further

 
16
    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
17
presented to the family of Officer Eric Lee as an expression of 
18
our respect and gratitude for his willingness to protect and 
19
serve his community.
