HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives are pleased to recognize two individuals who have treated several generations of Chicago's children, Dr. Herbert and Dr. Ruth Lerner, on the occasion of their retirement; and

WHEREAS, Herbert I. Lerner was born in Chicago on November 3, 1923; a product of Chicago Public Schools, he graduated from Marshall High School and went on to Herzl Junior College, Roosevelt, and the University of Illinois; his education was interrupted when he served in the U.S. Army Air Force for three years as a radio operator mechanic on a C 46 troop carrier; and

WHEREAS, In the meantime, Ruth G. Lerner was born on December 8, 1923, in Vyprty, Czechoslovakia; she graduated from high school in Barenstein, Germany, and went on to Gymnasium in Karlsbad, Czechoslovakia, and medical school in Prague, Czechoslovakia; and

WHEREAS, She migrated to the U.S. in 1946 with her parents and twin sister, Ingeborg; she and Dr. Herbert I. Lerner were married during their last year of medical school in 1950; they graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1951; both are members of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the AOA Medical Honorary Society; and

WHEREAS, Together, they opened a private practice in September of 1954 in Hyde Park in Chicago; for over 50 years, they have met, with able assistance from Camille Latimer, the medical needs of countless area children with consummate skill and caring commitment, taking more than a single generation from the first DPT shot through the flu, from strep throat to more serious health challenges; and

WHEREAS, The Drs. Lerner worked hard to eliminate racial discrimination and, in their practice, led by example; and

WHEREAS, The phone number 643-2550 is as deeply embedded in our parental memories as the Drs. Lerner are in our hearts; and

WHEREAS, The Drs. Lerner are being honored at a retirement celebration on Saturday, September 9, 2006; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we join with their loving family, staff, patients, and their parents in thanking Dr. Herbert and Dr. Ruth Lerner for the many, many years they have devoted to healing and helping children in the Chicago area, and we wish them well in the future; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Drs. Lerner, pediatricians par excellence, as an expression of our profound respect and esteem and with our gratitude for the years they have served us.
