HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the State of Illinois learned with regret of the death of Dr. Clinton Bristow, Jr., President of Alcorn State University, on August 19, 2006; and

WHEREAS, He held a B.A., a J.D., and a Ph.D. degree from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, and an MBA from Governors State University, University Park, Illinois; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Bristow's administrative experiences included serving as president of the Chicago Board of Education and Dean of the College of Business at Chicago State University; and

WHEREAS, He was named president of Alcorn State University on August 24, 1995, where he remained committed to increasing the percentage of minority graduate students by doubling their enrollment; he increased the public's awareness of the value and the contributions of land-grant universities; he established a faculty research incentive program to enhance research in the sciences; he established programs that focus on preparing more minority students for success in the STEM disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics; and he led Alcorn to become a national leader in the production of African-American baccalaureate graduates in the life and agricultural sciences; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Bristow was active in many organizations and held board memberships on the Board of Directors of the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC), the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO), the Capital Financing Board for HBCUs, and the Congressional Award Board; he was also active in the Chicago Bar Association, the Chicago Youth Success Foundation, and the Illinois Committee on Black Concerns in Higher Education; and

WHEREAS, The passing of Dr. Clinton Bristow, Jr., has been deeply felt by many, especially his life partner, Lezli Baskerville; his daughter, Maya Bristow; his sister, Annie Peoples, and her children, Shameece and James; his brother, David Bristow; his god sister, Mary E. Young; and his many uncles, aunts, nieces, and nephews; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that together with his family, his friends, and the citizens of this State and this great nation, we mourn the passing of Dr. Clinton Bristow, Jr., and we extend to his family our sincerest condolences; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to his family as an expression of our deepest sympathy.
