HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the State of Illinois are pleased to congratulate the Reverend Stan J. Sloan on being a recipient of the 2006 Human Relations Award given by the Chicago Commission on Human Relations; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Sloan serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Chicago House and Social Service Agency; Chicago House, the Midwest's first provider of housing and support services to Chicagoans affected by HIV/AIDS, is in its 21st year of service; he began with Chicago House in 2000 and has served as CEO for a quarter of the agency's existence; and

WHEREAS, Under his leadership, Chicago House has regained financial stability and has built up reserves desperately needed to assure consistency in service delivery; the agency has expanded in both services offered and clients served; and

WHEREAS, Reverend Sloan, an Episcopal priest with the Episcopal Diocese of Chicago, has been a leader in the homeless and AIDS service communities for over ten years; in June of 2005, he was elected by other homeless service providers to serve as the Chair of the Board of the Partnership to End Homelessness, the city's collaborative body of service providers; as Chair, he works with organizations and government entities at the local, State, and federal level on issues facing the 90 homeless agencies it represents; in addition, he recently served on the Governing Board of the Chicago Continuum of Care, where he chaired the Government Relations Committee for the City of Chicago's 10-Year Plan to End Homelessness; he serves as a Co-Chair of the Board of the Chicago Housing for Health Partnership and is a former board member of the Illinois Chapter of the ACLU; and

WHEREAS, For the past six years, he has served as the volunteer chaplain of St. Gregory's Episcopal School, an inner city school serving children from the Henry Horner Homes; he has also served as the Pastor of Sts. George and Matthias Church in Roseland; he currently serves on an advisory committee for the American Public University System in Washington, D.C., as well as on the Audience Development and Diversity Committee of the Museum of Contemporary Art; he and Chicago House collaborated with the AIDS Foundation of Chicago and the Lesbian Community Cancer Project to sponsor the first reception for the Thirty Under Thirty GLBT Awards of the Windy City Times; he lives with his partner, Tom Franklin, in Wicker Park; and

WHEREAS, The Human Relations Award is given annually to people who have worked to break down barriers between communities and have worked for the elimination of bias and discrimination in housing and other social issues; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the Reverend Stan J. Sloan on being a recipient of the 2006 Human Relations Award given by the Chicago Commission on Human Relations; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Reverend Sloan as an expression of our esteem.
