| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, the third Moultrie County Courthouse was |
| 3 |
| dedicated November 12, 1906 before a crowd of several thousand; |
| 4 |
| it was built on the same location as the 1845 courthouse and |
| 5 |
| the 1865 courthouse; the construction was authorized by the |
| 6 |
| citizens by a vote of 1,165 yes and 816 no at a special |
| 7 |
| election authorized by the Board of Supervisors and held |
| 8 |
| February 16, 1904; and
|
| 9 |
| WHEREAS, In May 1904 the Board of Supervisors selected the |
| 10 |
| design of the firm of Deal & Ginzel architects of Lincoln, IL; |
| 11 |
| the plans called for a 75'x 90' three story building, with |
| 12 |
| basement, and 112" to the top of the dome; in August 1904 the |
| 13 |
| building contract was awarded to W. B. Walters, Co., Danville, |
| 14 |
| IL, in the amount of $67,952.50; and
|
| 15 |
| WHEREAS, The cornerstone was laid October 14, 1904 under |
| 16 |
| the auspice of the Knight of Pythias before a crowd estimated |
| 17 |
| at 6,000; and
|
| 18 |
| WHEREAS, On August 6, 1906 the courthouse was completed and |
| 19 |
| turned over the Board of Supervisors; and
|
| 20 |
| WHEREAS, At the November 12, 1906 dedication a statue of a |
| 21 |
| Civil War soldier was dedicated and placed on the courthouse |
| 22 |
| lawn; a fountain paid for by the W.C.T.U. was also placed on |
| 23 |
| the courthouse lawn; In 1907 a Civil War cannon was obtained by |
| 24 |
| Sen. William McKinley of Urbana, given to the county and the |
| 25 |
| Grand Army of the Republic, and placed on the courthouse lawn; |
| 26 |
| and in 1921 a monument was erected on the courthouse lawn |
| 27 |
| commemorating Abraham Lincoln and his travels across the Eighth |
| 28 |
| Judicial Circuit, which included Moultrie County; and
|
| 29 |
| WHEREAS, The Moultrie County Courthouse was placed on the |
| 30 |
| National Register of Historic Places on April 25, 1995 by the |
