| HOUSE RESOLUTION
|
| 2 |
| WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the |
| 3 |
| State of Illinois wish to congratulate Richard Powers on being |
| 4 |
| awarded the National Book Award for his fiction novel "The Echo |
| 5 |
| Maker"; and
|
| 6 |
| WHEREAS, Winners of the National Book Award each receive a |
| 7 |
| prize of $10,000; and
|
| 8 |
| WHEREAS, "The Echo Maker" is a scientific tale of memory |
| 9 |
| and identity set in the age of September 11th and the Iraq War; |
| 10 |
| it includes passages on neurology and clinical psychology in a |
| 11 |
| story about a man who loses his memory in a car crash and the |
| 12 |
| sister who agonizes over his failure to recognize her; he often |
| 13 |
| refers to the news of the time, setting his narrative against |
| 14 |
| the shock of the terrorist attacks and the determined path to |
| 15 |
| the Iraq War; and
|
| 16 |
| WHEREAS, Richard Powers is a Swanlund Chair professor at |
| 17 |
| the University of Illinois and has long worked in his love for |
| 18 |
| science in such works as "Galatea 2.2" and "Operation Wandering |
| 19 |
| Soul"; and
|
| 20 |
| WHEREAS, Richard Powers is a widely respected author with a |
| 21 |
| passionate readership; therefore, be it
|
| 22 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
| 23 |
| NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
| 24 |
| we congratulate Richard Powers on being awarded the National |
| 25 |
| Book Award; and be it further
|
| 26 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
| 27 |
| presented to Richard Powers as a token of our esteem.
