HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the House of Representatives of the State of Illinois whish to congratulate Lake Land College on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of its founding; and

WHEREAS, On September 24, 1996, voters in 13 school districts voted to form a community college district in east central Illinois; the 13 original districts consisted of Casey, Charleston, Cowden/Herrick, Cumberland, Kansas, Mattoon, Neoga, Oakland, Shelbyville, Stewardson-Strasburg, Tower Hill, Westfield, and Windsor; over the years, due to the strong reputation of the school, the districts of Martinsville, Beecher City, Effingham, Teutopolis, Grove Elementary (northern Newton), Sullivan, Dieterich, Altamont, Farina-LaGrove, Bethany, Brownstown, Findlay, Marshall, North Clay County, Paris Crestwood, Ramsey, Shiloh (Hume/Brocton/Redmon), Arthur, Lovington, Pana, Paris Union 95, and the northeast corner of the Vandalia district, all joined with Lake Land College; and

WHEREAS, Virgil H. Judge was named the first president of Lake Land College on March 1, 1967; classes started on September 6, 1967 in temporary facilities; the second president, Doctor Robert D. Webb, assumed the position of president on July 1, 1972 and during his tenure oversaw the full recognition and accreditation by the North Central Association of Colleges and Universities; Doctor David V. Schultz took over as president on August 1, 1984 and oversaw the college's transition from quarters to semesters; Doctor Robert K. Luther became the fourth president on July 1, 1988 and guided the college to numerous achievements, including the dedication of many new buildings, annexation of new districts, and a milestone enrollment of over 10,000 at the end of Spring 2004; Doctor Bill J. Thallemer assumed the presidency of Lake Land College on July 1, 2006; and

WHEREAS, The College district consists of 4,000 square miles with an approximate population of 202,000; its 308-acre campus has eight major buildings, seven support buildings, two campus ponds, a 160-acre agriculture land laboratory, and a 30,000 volume Virgil H. Judge Learning Resource Center; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Lake Land College on the occasion of its 40th anniversary and wish it continued success in the future; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Lake Land College president, Bill J. Thallemer, and the Lake Land College community.
