AMENDMENT TO SENATE BILL 575

2     AMENDMENT NO. ______. Amend Senate Bill 575 by replacing
3 everything after the enacting clause with the following:
 
4     "Section 5. The School Code is amended by changing Section
5 27-22 as follows:
 
6     (105 ILCS 5/27-22)  (from Ch. 122, par. 27-22)
7     Sec. 27-22. Required high school courses.
8     (a) As a prerequisite to receiving a high school diploma,
9 each pupil entering the 9th grade in the 1984-1985 school year
10 through the 2004-2005 school year and subsequent years must, in
11 addition to other course requirements, successfully complete
12 the following courses:
13         (1) 1. three years of language arts;
14         (2) 2. two years of mathematics, one of which may be
15     related to computer technology;
16         (3) 3. one year of science;
17         (4) 4. two years of social studies, of which at least
18     one year must be history of the United States or a
19     combination of history of the United States and American
20     government; and
21         (5) 5. One year chosen from (A) music, (B) art, (C)
22     foreign language, which shall be deemed to include American
23     Sign Language or (D) vocational education.
24     (b) As a prerequisite to receiving a high school diploma,

1 each pupil entering the 9th grade in the 2005-2006 school year
2 must, in addition to other course requirements, successfully
3 complete all of the following courses:
4         (1) Three years of language arts.
5         (2) Three years of mathematics.
6         (3) One year of science.
7         (4) Two years of social studies, of which at least one
8     year must be history of the United States or a combination
9     of history of the United States and American government.
10         (5) One year chosen from (A) music, (B) art, (C)
11     foreign language, which shall be deemed to include American
12     Sign Language, or (D) vocational education.
13     (c) As a prerequisite to receiving a high school diploma,
14 each pupil entering the 9th grade in the 2006-2007 school year
15 must, in addition to other course requirements, successfully
16 complete all of the following courses:
17         (1) Three years of language arts.
18         (2) Two years of writing intensive courses, one of
19     which must be English and the other of which may be English
20     or any other subject. When applicable, writing-intensive
21     courses may be counted towards the fulfillment of other
22     graduation requirements.
23         (3) Three years of mathematics, one of which must be
24     Algebra I and one of which must include geometry content.
25         (4) One year of science.
26         (5) Two years of social studies, of which at least one
27     year must be history of the United States or a combination
28     of history of the United States and American government.
29         (6) One year chosen from (A) music, (B) art, (C)
30     foreign language, which shall be deemed to include American
31     Sign Language, or (D) vocational education.
32     (d) As a prerequisite to receiving a high school diploma,
33 each pupil entering the 9th grade in the 2007-2008 school year
34 must, in addition to other course requirements, successfully

1 complete all of the following courses:
2         (1) Three years of language arts.
3         (2) Two years of writing intensive courses, one of
4     which must be English and the other of which may be English

26     courses may be counted towards the fulfillment of other
27     graduation requirements.

30         (4) Two years of science.
31         (5) Two years of social studies, of which at least one
32     year must be history of the United States or a combination
33     of history of the United States and American government.

1     foreign language, which shall be deemed to include American
2     Sign Language, or (D) vocational education.
3     (f) The State Board of Education shall develop and inform
4 school districts of standards for writing-intensive
5 coursework.
6     (g) This amendatory Act of 1983 does not apply to pupils
7 entering the 9th grade in 1983-1984 school year and prior
8 school years or to students with disabilities whose course of
9 study is determined by an individualized education program.
10     This amendatory Act of the 94th General Assembly does not
11 apply to pupils entering the 9th grade in the 2004-2005 school
12 year or a prior school year or to students with disabilities
13 whose course of study is determined by an individualized
14 education program.
15     (h) The provisions of this Section are subject to the
16 provisions of Section 27-22.05.
