| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois | ||||||
| 3 | learned with sadness of the death of Roy Dayton Wolfe of | ||||||
| 4 | Edwardsville on Wednesday, February 9, 2005; and
| ||||||
| 5 | WHEREAS, He was born March 3, 1916, in Honey Point Township | ||||||
| 6 | in Macoupin County to Henry and Mabel (Barnes) Wolfe; he | ||||||
| 7 | married Edna Sedlacek on October 15, 1941, in Edwardsville; and
| ||||||
| 8 | WHEREAS, A 1934 graduate of Gillespie High School, he had | ||||||
| 9 | been a resident of Edwardsville since 1939, when he established | ||||||
| 10 | Taylor's Taxi; he later worked at Western Cartridge, now Olin | ||||||
| 11 | Corp.; in January 1942, he joined the U.S. Army, trained at | ||||||
| 12 | Camp Polk, Louisiana, and Camp Cooke, California, and | ||||||
| 13 | maneuvered in the California desert before joining the Third | ||||||
| 14 | Armored Division as they went overseas, finishing training in | ||||||
| 15 | England; and
| ||||||
| 16 | WHEREAS, Mr. Wolfe served in the European Theatre, landing | ||||||
| 17 | on Utah Beach in July 1944, serving with Gen. George Patton for | ||||||
| 18 | the duration of the war as combat infantryman in the Ninth | ||||||
| 19 | Armored Division; he saw action in Normandy, Luxembourg, | ||||||
| 20 | Belgium, and Germany; he fought in the Battle of the Bulge, | ||||||
| 21 | Rhineland, and central Europe until they met the Russian Army; | ||||||
| 22 | his platoon participated in the liberation of Buchenwald | ||||||
| 23 | concentration camp; and
| ||||||
| 24 | WHEREAS, He spoke to many groups about his wartime | ||||||
| 25 | experiences; he received five campaign stars on the European | ||||||
| 26 | Theatre Ribbon and the Silver and Bronze Stars; returning home, | ||||||
| 27 | he went to work for Shell Oil, where he worked until retiring; | ||||||
| 28 | and
| ||||||
| 29 | WHEREAS, The 20-year Edwardsville Township trustee was a | ||||||
| 30 | 50-year member and past president of the Kiwanis club, | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | Democratic Committeeman of Precinct 9 for 50 years, and a | ||||||
| 2 | member of the Muny Band board, Edwardsville Community | ||||||
| 3 | Foundation, and Edwardsville YMCA Century Club; he was also | ||||||
| 4 | active with the St. Louis Gateway Chapter Veterans of the | ||||||
| 5 | Battle of the Bulge, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1299, | ||||||
| 6 | American Legion Post 199, Sixth Armored Division Association, | ||||||
| 7 | Seventh Armored Division Association, Madison County | ||||||
| 8 | Democratic executive board, Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage | ||||||
| 9 | Foundation Inc., Township Officials of Illinois, Shell | ||||||
| 10 | Recreation Association, Friends of St. Louis Zoo Association, | ||||||
| 11 | and the Madison County Mental Health Clinic board; and
| ||||||
| 12 | WHEREAS, Mr. Wolfe loved children, and one of his greatest | ||||||
| 13 | joys was being Santa Claus for children for many years; his | ||||||
| 14 | passing has been deeply felt by many, especially his wife, | ||||||
| 15 | Edna; his daughters, Sue Wolfe Ricker and Jana Wolfe; his | ||||||
| 16 | granddaughter, Courtney Ricker Black; his great-granddaughter, | ||||||
| 17 | Paige Elizabeth Black; his sisters, Geraldine Kennedy and Fern | ||||||
| 18 | Sexton; and his brother, Maynard Wolfe; he was preceded in | ||||||
| 19 | death by his parents; his son, Alan Roy; his brother, Russell | ||||||
| 20 | Wolfe; and his sister, Byrl Wolfe Griva; therefore, be it | ||||||
| 21 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL | ||||||
| 22 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
| 23 | Roy Dayton Wolfe, and we extend our deepest sympathy to his | ||||||
| 24 | family, friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be it | ||||||
| 25 | further
| ||||||
| 26 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 27 | presented to his family as an expression of our sincerest | ||||||
| 28 | condolences during their time of bereavement.
