SENATE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois learned with sadness of the death of Margie Ree Brumfield on Sunday, February 27, 2005; and

WHEREAS, She was born December 18, 1939, in Prentiss, Mississippi, the fifth of twelve children born to Robert and Lonnie Mae Phillips, Sr.; she graduated from Prentiss Normal and Industrial Institute High School in Prentiss, Mississippi, in 1959 and later moved to Chicago; and

WHEREAS, She married Myrtis Brumfield on August 13, 1960; they were married for 44 years; she started employment with Sara Lee Bakery in 1964, where she worked for 27 years; she later worked with Nabisco and retired from Nabisco after 37 combined years under the Baker, Confectionery, and Tobacco Worker's International Union (AFL-CIO & CLC); and

WHEREAS, Margie joined Christ Temple Cathedral under the leadership of the late Bishop O. W. McInnis in 1975; as an outgrowth of her Christian development, she became a member of the Deaconess Board under the leadership of Bishop Emery Lindsay and served faithfully; she was a member of the Sunday School and attended the Deborah's class and Sunday morning worship services faithfully until her health failed; and

WHEREAS, Mrs. Brumfield will be remembered for her warm, loving, and kind spirit; she had a big heart, and she loved to cook and entertain; her home was open to all and was often a gathering place for family, friends, food, and fun; because of this she was often called Hazel; she also loved traveling and shopping; and

WHEREAS, The passing of Margie Ree Brumfield has been deeply felt by many, especially her husband, Myrtis Brumfield; her daughter, Joyce E. (Bobby) Lay; her sons, Leander (Norie) Brumfield, Curtis Brumfield, and Derrick Brumfield; her mother and father, Lonnie Mae and Robert Phillips, Sr.; her sisters, Annie Lois (Artie) Byrd, Mae (Willie) White, Emma (James) Kitchens, Eloise (Al) Wallace, Lonnie "Sweet" (Joe) Payne, and Ruby (Willie) Wright; her brothers, R. C. (Maxine) Phillips and James (Geraldine) Phillips; her brother-in-law, Eugene (Phaylor) Brumfield; her sisters-in-law, Fairley (William) Willis, Lucinda (Abraham) Snyder, Hilda Brumfield, and Robin Phillips; her grandchildren, Latosha Tyler, Leander Brumfield, Jr., Patrick Brumfield, Robert F. Lay, Danielle Tyler, Tyler Brumfield, Christopher J. Lay, and Simone Brumfield; her aunt, Reatha Mae Berry; her godmother, Maggie Hodo; her godchildren, Jada and Jarron Yancey; and her many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; she was preceded in death by her brothers Robert Phillips, Jr., E.J. Phillips, and Eddie Phillips; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of Margie Ree Brumfield, and we extend our deepest sympathy to her family, friends, and all who knew and loved her; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to her family as an expression of our sincere condolences.
