| SENATE RESOLUTION
|
| 2 |
| WHEREAS, The National Campaign to Stop Red Light Running |
| 3 |
| has assembled a team of leaders from the fields of law |
| 4 |
| enforcement, transportation engineering, healthcare and |
| 5 |
| emergency medicine, and traffic safety to tackle this crucial |
| 6 |
| safety issue; and
|
| 7 |
| WHEREAS, In 2002, as many as 207,000 crashes, 178,000, |
| 8 |
| injuries, and 921 fatalities in the United States were |
| 9 |
| attributed to red light running; and |
| 10 |
| WHEREAS, In many cities, the yellow light has come to |
| 11 |
| symbolize "hurry up" instead of "slow down"; therefore, be it
|
| 12 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL |
| 13 |
| ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we urge the Illinois |
| 14 |
| Department of Transportation and local communities to program |
| 15 |
| their traffic signals at high-accident locations to add an |
| 16 |
| additional 2 seconds of red light time before the signal |
| 17 |
| changes to green, allowing intersections to clear before cross |
| 18 |
| traffic commences; and be it further
|
| 19 |
| RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be delivered to |
| 20 |
| the Secretary of the Illinois Department of Transportation, the |
| 21 |
| Illinois Municipal League, and the Township Officials of |
| 22 |
| Illinois.
