2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois | ||||||
3 | learned with regret of the death of Rev. Nathan Norval Bartel | ||||||
4 | of Wheaton, formerly of Naperville, on Tuesday, August 8, 2006; | ||||||
5 | and
| ||||||
6 | WHEREAS, He was born on August 15, 1915, in Wautoma, | ||||||
7 | Wisconsin; he graduated from North Central College and received | ||||||
8 | his Master of Divinity degree from Evangelical Theological | ||||||
9 | Seminary; and
| ||||||
10 | WHEREAS, He moved to Naperville in 1966 to be Director of | ||||||
11 | Church and Alumni Relations at North Central College; in 1975, | ||||||
12 | he joined the staff of the Center for Parish Development, an | ||||||
13 | interdenominational research and development agency; upon his | ||||||
14 | retirement in the 1980s, he continued to serve as an Adjunct | ||||||
15 | Staff Consultant for the Center and as a Development Associate | ||||||
16 | at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston; and
| ||||||
17 | WHEREAS, He held extensive leadership roles in the | ||||||
18 | Wisconsin Conference of the former Evangelical United Brethren | ||||||
19 | denomination, serving on the Board of Church Extension and | ||||||
20 | Missions; he chaired committees and commissions of the Councils | ||||||
21 | of Churches of Wisconsin in Milwaukee and Racine counties; | ||||||
22 | throughout his ministry, he was enthusiastic and instrumental | ||||||
23 | in developing programs for Christian youth, church camping, | ||||||
24 | ecumenical relations, mental health organizations, and radio | ||||||
25 | and TV interfaith ministries; in 1944, he created the | ||||||
26 | "Interfaith Radio Program" for WTMJ, the Milwaukee Journal | ||||||
27 | station; in 2005, he was awarded a Certificate of Service to | ||||||
28 | the Wisconsin Conference of UMC for 70 years of service to | ||||||
29 | God's people; and
| ||||||
30 | WHEREAS, His volunteer community work included | ||||||
31 | directorships on numerous civic and welfare boards in the |

| |||||||
1 | cities where he ministered; he served as the president of the | ||||||
2 | Alumni Association for both of his alma maters, and in 1982, he | ||||||
3 | received the Outstanding Alumnus Award from North Central | ||||||
4 | College; and
| ||||||
5 | WHEREAS, Rev. Bartel was president of the Naperville-North | ||||||
6 | Central College Performing Arts Association from 1980 to 1983; | ||||||
7 | the Association's board of directors made him a "life director" | ||||||
8 | "in grateful recognition of his many contributions to the | ||||||
9 | association"; he was a member and Chaplain of Kiwanis | ||||||
10 | International in Wauwatosa and Racine and the Evening Kiwanis | ||||||
11 | Club of Naperville, which awarded him the Hixson Fellowship | ||||||
12 | Award; the Naperville Jaycees awarded him for his community | ||||||
13 | service in the religion category; and
| ||||||
14 | WHEREAS, He was a leader in the organization of the Edward | ||||||
15 | Hospital Chapter of Mended Hearts, working with cardiac | ||||||
16 | patients and their families as an "on-call chaplain" at Edward | ||||||
17 | Hospital; as an active member of Community United Methodist | ||||||
18 | Church, Naperville, he served as a Sunday school teacher and | ||||||
19 | chaired commissions on worship, education, and evangelism; and
| ||||||
20 | WHEREAS, A world traveler, he and his wife, Isabelle, | ||||||
21 | shared their personal travelogues with many church and civic | ||||||
22 | groups; and
| ||||||
23 | WHEREAS, He will be remembered as a friendly, dedicated, | ||||||
24 | people's pastor; his passing has been deeply felt by many, | ||||||
25 | especially his wife, Isabelle (nee Williams) Bartel; his | ||||||
26 | daughters, Ellen Bartel and Marina (Daniel) Semprevivo; his | ||||||
27 | grandchildren, Michael (Anna), Paul, and Laura Semprevivo; and | ||||||
28 | his many nieces and nephews; he was preceded in death by his | ||||||
29 | parents, the Rev. William and Ellen (nee Clocksene) Bartel; his | ||||||
30 | brother, Elsmer; and his sister, Dorothy Fulton; therefore, be | ||||||
31 | it

1 | RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FOURTH GENERAL | ||||||
2 | ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn the passing of | ||||||
3 | Rev. Nathan Bartel, and we extend our sincere condolences to | ||||||
4 | his family, his friends, and all who knew and loved him; and be | ||||||
5 | it further
| ||||||
6 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
7 | presented to his family as an expression of our deepest | ||||||
8 | sympathy.
