| SENATE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The members of the Senate of the State of Illinois |
| 3 |
| learned with regret of the death of Marva Joyce Ryskiewicz of |
| 4 |
| Waukegan on Thursday, September 21, 2006; and
|
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, Mrs. Ryskiewicz was a dance teacher known to |
| 6 |
| hundreds of Lake County students; her career as a teacher of |
| 7 |
| dance spanned 53 years; and
|
| 8 |
| WHEREAS, Mrs. Ryskiewicz started her first dance studio |
| 9 |
| just after her graduation from Waukegan High School in 1953; |
| 10 |
| she was just 17 years old; and
|
| 11 |
| WHEREAS, Mrs. Ryskiewicz performed in the Chicago area for |
| 12 |
| a number of years; tap dancing was her forte; and
|
| 13 |
| WHEREAS, Her Applause with Marva Joyce Dance Studio opened |
| 14 |
| in Waukegan in 1973 and was open until September of 2005, when |
| 15 |
| Mrs. Ryskiewicz learned that she had brain cancer; and |
| 16 |
| WHEREAS, While undergoing radiation treatment and |
| 17 |
| surgeries, Mrs. Ryskiewicz demonstrated her amazing spirit and |
| 18 |
| love for dance in creating what she called "The Cancer Dance", |
| 19 |
| which she literally choreographed from her bed in the intensive |
| 20 |
| care unit; and |
| 21 |
| WHEREAS, Mrs. Ryskiewicz was known for teaching her |
| 22 |
| students what she knew about life; she talked about the dangers |
| 23 |
| of drugs and alcohol, discussed relationships, animal rights, |
| 24 |
| and other topics, and advised students to stay in school, go on |
| 25 |
| to college, and to see the world; these informal lessons were |
| 26 |
| sometimes called "Marva 101" by her students; and |
| 27 |
| WHEREAS, She was known as a true legend throughout her |
| 28 |
| community; in addition to teaching so many students how to |
