| AN ACT concerning education.

| Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois, |
| 3 |
| represented in the General Assembly:
|

| Section 5. The School Code is amended by adding Section |
| 5 |
| 10-20.46 as follows:
|

| 7 |
| Sec. 10-20.46. Safe Routes to School Construction Program. |
| 8 |
| School boards are encouraged to develop and pursue projects |
| 9 |
| that meet the eligibility criteria specified by the Safe Routes |
| 10 |
| to School Construction Program under Section 2705-317 of the |
| 11 |
| Department of Transportation Law of the Civil Administrative |
| 12 |
| Code of Illinois and that are otherwise in conformity with |
| 13 |
| applicable provisions of this School Code. These projects may |
| 14 |
| be financed with available unrestricted funds of the school |
| 15 |
| district. A school board may transfer funds as provided in |
| 16 |
| Section 17-2A of this Code and other provisions of this Code to |
| 17 |
| finance projects for these purposes. School boards are |
| 18 |
| encouraged to apply for funding for such projects through the |
| 19 |
| Safe Routes to School Construction Program and other local, |
| 20 |
| State, and federal funding sources.
