Amends the State Universities Article of the Illinois Pension Code. Changes provisions concerning election of medicare coverage to require the State Universities Retirement System to provide divided medicare coverage on a prospective basis to employees continuously employed by the same employer since March 31, 1986 who apply within 6 months after the effective date.

| AN ACT concerning public employee benefits.
|

| Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
|
| 3 |
| represented in the General Assembly:
|

| Section 5. The Illinois Pension Code is amended by changing |
| 5 |
| Section 15-158.4 as follows: |
| 6 |
| (40 ILCS 5/15-158.4)
|

| Sec. 15-158.4. Election of medicare coverage.(a) The |
| 8 |
| System shall provide
conduct a divided medicare coverage on a |
| 9 |
| prospective basis
referendum, open
to employees continuously |
| 10 |
| employed by the same employer since March 31, 1986 who apply to |
| 11 |
| the System within 6 months after the effective date of this |
| 12 |
| amendatory Act of the 95th General Assembly.
The referendum |
| 13 |
| shall be conducted in accordance with the applicable provisions
|
| 14 |
| of federal law and Article 21 of this Code.
|
| 15 |
| (b) As used in this Section and in compliance with federal |
| 16 |
| law, "referendum"
means the process whereby employees are |
| 17 |
| granted the opportunity to make an
irrevocable individual |
| 18 |
| election to participate in the medicare program on a
|
| 19 |
| prospective basis.
|
| 20 |
| (c) Employers shall pay the necessary employer |
| 21 |
| contributions and make the
necessary deductions from salary for |
| 22 |
| employees who elect to participate in the
federal medicare |
| 23 |
| program under this Section, as required by the System, Article
|
