Amends the Election Code. Provides that a vacancy in the office of U.S. Senator is filled, until the next election of U.S. Representatives, by a person selected jointly by the State executive branch constitutional officers, assembled at the call of the Governor (now, filled until that election by gubernatorial appointment). Effective immediately.

| AN ACT concerning elections.
|

| Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
|
| 3 |
| represented in the General Assembly:
|
| 4 |
| Section 5. The Election Code is amended by changing Section |
| 5 |
| 25-8 as follows:
|
| 6 |
| (10 ILCS 5/25-8) (from Ch. 46, par. 25-8)

| Sec. 25-8.
When a vacancy shall occur in the office of |
| 8 |
| United States
Senator from this state, the vacancy shall be |
| 9 |
| filled, the Governor shall make temporary appointment to
fill |
| 10 |
| such vacancy until the next election of representatives in |
| 11 |
| Congress,
by a person selected jointly by the Governor, |
| 12 |
| Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Secretary of State, |
| 13 |
| State Comptroller, and State Treasurer, assembled at the call |
| 14 |
| of the Governor. At the next election of representatives in |
| 15 |
| Congress, the vacancy at which time such vacancy shall be |
| 16 |
| filled by election, and the senator so
elected shall take |
| 17 |
| office as soon thereafter as he shall receive his
certificate |
| 18 |
| of election.

| Section 99. Effective date. This Act takes effect upon |

| becoming law.
