| AMENDMENT NO. ___. Amend House Joint Resolution 88 by |

| replacing everything after the title with the following:
|

| "WHEREAS, In 1885, the 34th Illinois General Assembly |
| 5 |
| passed legislation to establish a soldiers' and sailors' home |
| 6 |
| for disabled Illinois veterans of the Mexican and Civil Wars; |
| 7 |
| and
|
| 8 |
| WHEREAS, On June 1, 1886, Governor Richard Oglesby decided |
| 9 |
| on Quincy as the site of the new home; the home is the largest |
| 10 |
| and oldest veterans home of the four located in Illinois, and |
| 11 |
| one of the larger and older veterans homes in the country; and
|
| 12 |
| WHEREAS, Originally named "Soldiers and Sailors Home" |
| 13 |
| until 1974, it is currently home to nearly 600 veterans and |
| 14 |
| their spouses; over 70 of the 102 counties in Illinois are |
| 15 |
| represented within the current membership; and
|
|

| WHEREAS, The Illinois Veterans' Home at Quincy is |
| 2 |
| responsible for providing economical and quality long-term |
| 3 |
| care for veterans and their spouses, which includes domiciliary |
| 4 |
| care, intermediate care, and skilled care; and
|
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, Sunset Cemetery is located on the grounds of the |
| 6 |
| Illinois Veterans Home in Quincy; and
|
| 7 |
| WHEREAS, Over 7,000 veterans and spouses are laid to rest |
| 8 |
| at Sunset Cemetery, dating back to the Civil War, including a |
| 9 |
| large number of Medal of Honor recipients; and
|
| 10 |
| WHEREAS, A section of U.S. Route 24 runs through Quincy; |
| 11 |
| therefore, be it
|
| 12 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
| 13 |
| NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, THE |
| 14 |
| SENATE CONCURRING HEREIN, that the section of U.S. Route 24 |
| 15 |
| that runs from the Mississippi River to the junction of U.S. |
| 16 |
| Route 24 and Interstate 172, north of Quincy, be designated |
| 17 |
| "The Veterans Medal of Honor Highway"; and be it further
|
| 18 |
| RESOLVED, That the Department of Transportation is |
| 19 |
| requested to erect at suitable locations, consistent with State |
| 20 |
| regulations, appropriate signs giving notice of the name; and |
