HOUSE RESOLUTION

    WHEREAS, It has come to the attention of the members of the 
3
Illinois House of Representatives that Illinois State 
4
University is celebrating its sesquicentennial year in 2007; 
5
and

 
6
    WHEREAS, Illinois State Normal University was founded by 
7
Jesse W. Fell in 1857 as the first public university in the 
8
State of Illinois; it was first established as a teacher 
9
education institution; Abraham Lincoln, then an attorney, drew 
10
up the bond that guaranteed Bloomington citizens would fulfill 
11
financial pledges to finance the University; and

 
12
    WHEREAS, Illinois State Normal University became Illinois 
13
State University in 1964; and

 
14
    WHEREAS, Illinois State University is led by President Al 
15
Bowman; the school's 17th president, and its Board of Trustees; 
16
and
 
17
    WHEREAS, Illinois State University currently has over 
18
20,000 students from 47 states and 86 countries; there are 800 
19
faculty members and over 2,000 staff members; and

    WHEREAS, Student athletes, with leadership from athletic

department coaches and staff members, excel in the classroom in 
2
19 sports; and
 
3
    WHEREAS, There are over 165,000 alumni of Illinois State 
4
University living around the world; the University is ranked as 
5
one of the 100 "best values" in public higher education by 
6
Kiplinger Magazine; and

 
7
    WHEREAS, The University will begin its celebration with 
8
Founders Day on February 15, 2007; therefore, be it

 
9
    RESOLVED, BY THE  HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
10
NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
11
congratulate President Al Bowman, the Board of Trustees, the 
12
faculty, staff, and students of Illinois State University on 
13
the sesquicentennial anniversary of the institution; and be it 
14
further

    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
16
presented to Illinois State University President Al Bowman and 
17
the Board of Trustees.
