HOUSE RESOLUTION

    WHEREAS, The institution of marriage is one of the 
3
cornerstones upon which our society is built, and a marriage 
4
that has achieved a notable longevity is truly a model for the 
5
people of the State of Illinois; and
 
6
    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
7
Representatives wish to congratulate George and Billie Paige on 
8
the occasion of their 50th wedding anniversary; and

 
9
    WHEREAS, George and Billie Paige were married on February 
10
16, 1957 at St. Agatha's Catholic Church in Chicago; they are 
11
the proud parents of Stephen and Gary; and

 
12
    WHEREAS, George is the son of legendary baseball pitcher 
13
Satchel Paige; he is retired from the United States Postal 
14
Service, where he worked as a Post Office Manager and as a 
15
Management Trainer; and

 
16
    WHEREAS, Billie was employed by the Catholic Archdiocese of 
17
Chicago, where she worked as a social worker; in 1973 she began 
18
a career with the Bureau of Employment Security; in 1974 she 
19
became the first Black and the first woman to serve as 
20
Commissioner of Unemployment Compensation; in 1975 she was 
21
appointed the Assistant Director of the Illinois Department of

Registration and Education; and

    WHEREAS, In 1980 Billie Paige left State government and 
3
became the Director of Government Affairs  at the Illinois 
4
Hospital Association; in 1983 she joined the lobbying firm of 
5
Shea, Rogal & Associates, which became Shea, Paige & Rogal when 
6
she became a partner; and

 
7
    WHEREAS, The Paiges are member of St. Ailbe's Catholic 
8
Church on the Southeast side of Chicago; they live in Crete 
9
with their two dogs, Candi and McDuff; therefore, be it

 
10
    RESOLVED, BY THE  HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
11
NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
12
congratulate George and Billie Paige on the celebration of 
13
their golden anniversary; that we commend them for achieving a 
14
long and happy marriage, blessed with children, and rich in 
15
friendships; and that we wish them happiness and good health in 
16
the future; and be it further

 
17
    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
18
presented to George and Billie Paige as a symbol of our 
19
respect.
