| 1 | HOUSE RESOLUTION
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, School board members are elected to sit in trust | ||||||
| 3 | for their diverse communities, and in that capacity are charged | ||||||
| 4 | with meeting their communities' expectations and aspirations | ||||||
| 5 | for the public education of their children; and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, School board members are entrusted with the | ||||||
| 7 | guardianship and wise expenditure of scarce tax dollars; they | ||||||
| 8 | are responsible for maintaining and preserving the buildings, | ||||||
| 9 | grounds, and other areas of the school district that the | ||||||
| 10 | community has put in their trust; and | ||||||
| 11 | WHEREAS, School board members are responsible for | ||||||
| 12 | providing leadership that ensures a clear, shared vision of | ||||||
| 13 | public education for their schools, that sets high standards | ||||||
| 14 | for the education of all students, and requires the effective | ||||||
| 15 | and efficient operation of their districts; and
| ||||||
| 16 | WHEREAS, School board members adopt public policy to give | ||||||
| 17 | voice to that leadership and employ a superintendent to | ||||||
| 18 | administer board policy; they are also responsible for the | ||||||
| 19 | regular monitoring of the district's performance and | ||||||
| 20 | compliance with State policy; and
| ||||||
| 21 | WHEREAS, School board members selflessly donate countless | ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | hours to public service with no compensation; and
| ||||||
| 2 | WHEREAS, Effective school board membership requires | ||||||
| 3 | activities which may occur during business hours throughout the | ||||||
| 4 | year; many employers in the State of Illinois support their | ||||||
| 5 | employees who serve as school board members by allowing them | ||||||
| 6 | the time to participate in those activities; and | ||||||
| 7 | WHEREAS, Employers are supportive of their employees who | ||||||
| 8 | serve as school board members, generously lending support and | ||||||
| 9 | time; employers give their employees the opportunity to better | ||||||
| 10 | serve the needs of the school districts and citizens they | ||||||
| 11 | represent through sometimes tremendous sacrifice to the | ||||||
| 12 | employer; and | ||||||
| 13 | WHEREAS, The decisions made by school board members | ||||||
| 14 | directly impact the quality of life in their communities, | ||||||
| 15 | placing them at the front line of American democracy; | ||||||
| 16 | therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 17 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
| 18 | NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
| 19 | proclaim November 15 in 2007, and November 15 of each year | ||||||
| 20 | thereafter, as School Board Members Day in the State of | ||||||
| 21 | Illinois, as a way to honor those citizens who devote so much | ||||||
| 22 | of their time and energy for the education of our children.
