| HOUSE RESOLUTION
|

| WHEREAS, Over 7,000 women in the State of Illinois are |
3 |
| expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007; and
|
4 |
| WHEREAS, Over 1,700 women in the State of Illinois are |
5 |
| expected to die from breast cancer in 2007; and
|
6 |
| WHEREAS, In the United States, a woman receives a diagnosis |
7 |
| of breast cancer every three minutes, making that disease the |
8 |
| most frequently diagnosed of all cancers affecting women; it |
9 |
| was expected that, in 2007, approximately 178,000 cases of |
10 |
| breast cancer would be diagnosed among women in the United |
11 |
| States and that over 40,000 women would succumb to the disease; |
12 |
| and
|
13 |
| WHEREAS, Without a cure, one in eight women in the United |
14 |
| States will continue to be diagnosed with breast cancer; |
15 |
| moreover, the next quarter-century will see an estimated 5 |
16 |
| million American women and 25 million women worldwide diagnosed |
17 |
| with breast cancer, and more than a million American women and |
18 |
| some 10 million women worldwide could die; and
|
19 |
| WHEREAS, The State of Illinois is home to extremely |
20 |
| innovative and effective organizations that fight breast |
21 |
| cancer, including Illinois Affiliates of Susan G. Komen for the |
|
|

| Cure, the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection |

| Program, the STAND Against Cancer Initiative, the Hispanic |
3 |
| Breast and Cervical Cancer Initiative, ACCESS Community Health |

| Network, Y-ME Illinois, and the American Cancer Society |
5 |
| Illinois Division; and
|
6 |
| WHEREAS, Illinois has a special place in the history of |
7 |
| breast cancer advocacy, with Peoria being the home of Susan G. |
8 |
| Komen and her sister, Nancy Brinker, who founded the world's |
9 |
| largest breast cancer organization, Susan G. Komen for the |
10 |
| Cure, based on her promise to her dying sister to do everything |
11 |
| possible to fight the disease; and
|
12 |
| WHEREAS, Early detection of breast cancer is the key to |
13 |
| surviving the disease, with survival rates of over 95% when the |
14 |
| cancer is caught early while still confined to the breast; and
|
15 |
| WHEREAS, Public and private partnerships involving |
16 |
| Illinois Affiliates of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the |
17 |
| Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, |
18 |
| the STAND Against Cancer Initiative, the Hispanic Breast and |
19 |
| Cervical Cancer Initiative, ACCESS Community Health Network, |
20 |
| Y-ME Illinois, and the American Cancer Society Illinois |
21 |
| Division are supporting early detection of breast cancer, |
22 |
| especially for low-income and uninsured women; and
|

| WHEREAS, Illinois has made a strong commitment to provide |
2 |
| breast cancer screening services to low-income and uninsured |
3 |
| woman in the State of Illinois within ten years; therefore, be |
4 |
| it
|
5 |
| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
6 |
| NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that |
7 |
| the Illinois House of Representatives is committed to the goal |
8 |
| of providing breast cancer screening services to every |
9 |
| low-income and uninsured woman in the State of Illinois and |
10 |
| commends those thousands of Illinois breast cancer advocates |
11 |
| and survivors who are fighting to achieve this goal.
