HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of Cheryl Marie "Chip" Box of Rockford, who passed away on July 3, 2007; and

WHEREAS, Cheryl Box was born August 30, 1951, in Rockford, to Nathaniel (Jake) and Marbline Box; she was a member of the Mount Zion A.M.E. Church in Battle Creek, Michigan, where she was a member of the women's Bible study; she was previously a member of Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church, where she participated in Sunday school, the Young People's Department (YPD), Nora Taylor's Women's Missionary Society, director of the YPD, and the Usher Board; and

WHEREAS, Cheryl Box graduated from West High School and received her bachelor's and master's degrees from Northern Illinois University and her doctorate from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; she worked as an elementary school teacher, alternative education director, and elementary school principal for the Rockford School District, high school counselor for the Elgin School District, and chief improvement officer for the Battle Creek Public Schools; she also worked at Northern Illinois University in the CHANCE Program; and

WHEREAS, Cheryl Box was working as a principal-coach in the Detroit Public Schools at the time of her passing; and she provided private counseling services for the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services; and

WHEREAS, Cheryl Box bowled with the National Traveler's Bowling League and served on numerous boards and committees, including the Booker T. Washington Center Board of Directors, the Winnebago County Board, and Delta Kappa Gamma Society International; she was an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority; and

WHEREAS, Cheryl Box leaves a loving family, including her mother, Marbline Box; her sisters, Joyce Brown and Gwendolyn Box; her niece, Shawna (Terrence) Young; her nephews, Kelley Hudson, Marcus Hudson, Derrick (Jamica) Brown, James Box, and Jermaine Box; her great-nephew, Caleb Young; her godsons, Mario Marshall and Maynard McGee; as well as a host of other relatives and friends; she also leaves special friends, John Richards, Sondra Archibald, and Carstella Miller; she was preceded in death by her father; her sister, Betty Louise Hudson; and maternal and paternal grandparents; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with her family and friends, the passing of Cheryl Marie "Chip" Box; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Cheryl Marie "Chip" Box as a symbol of our sympathy.
