HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to honor Dr. Margaret T. Burroughs, Chicago Park District Commissioner, founder and President Emeritus of the DuSable Museum of African-American History in Chicago, on being honored by the Historymaker and Preservation Committee for Celebrating African-American People; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Burroughs was a professor of Humanities at Kennedy-King College from 1968 to 1979; she was an educator in the Chicago Public Schools from 1946 to 1968; and she has been a volunteer teacher at the Joliet and Statesville prisons for the past 12 years; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Burroughs enjoys traveling to other countries, attending education seminars and cultural activities, and assisting other communities in setting up African-American history museums and cultural centers; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Burroughs has Honorary Doctorates from Lewis University, Chicago State University, the Art Institute of Chicago, Columbia College, North Central College, Rhode Island College, DePaul University, and Spelman College; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Burroughs holds a Masters degree in Art Education from the Art Institute of Chicago; and she received an appointment and citation by President Carter as a member of the National Commission on African-American History and Culture; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Burroughs is a founder of the National Conference of African-American Artists and the Near South Side Community Art Center; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Dr. Margaret T. Burroughs on being honored by the Historymaker and Preservation Committee for Celebrating African-American People; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Dr. Margaret Burroughs as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
