HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to commend Jon Brough, former police Sergeant with the Belleville Police Department; and

WHEREAS, Jon Brough worked for the Belleville Police Department for 22 years, serving as a Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) officer for five years in the Belleville schools; he then served four years as an undercover officer with the Illinois State Police drug task force; and

WHEREAS, While attempting to apprehend the suspected murderer of an elderly couple, Jon Brough was the first officer to enter the home where a suspect was hiding; the suspect opened fire and critically wounded the officer; Officer Brough was airlifted to St. Louis University Hospital where he remained in a coma for three weeks; as a result of the shooting he was blinded and continues to undergo numerous rehabilitative surgeries; and

WHEREAS, Jon Brough received the Illinois Law Enforcement Medal of Honor, awarded to law enforcement members who are killed or seriously injured in the line of duty or have displayed exceptional bravery; and

WHEREAS, Jon Brough was one of the first two officers from Belleville to receive the award; at the awards ceremony, held at the Executive Mansion in Springfield, Jon Brough received a one-minute standing ovation when he received his award; and

WHEREAS, Jon Brough and his wife, Wendy, have two children, Jon Jr., and Paul; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we commend Jon Brough for his bravery in the line of duty and wish him the best in all his future endeavors; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Jon Brough as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
