HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to congratulate Rabbi Harvey and
4 Vivien Well and Mr. Lawrence A. Sherman on being the honorees
5 at the 2007 Keter Award Banquet of the Associated Talmud Torahs
6 of Chicago; and
 
7     WHEREAS, The 2007 Keter Award Banquet of the Associated
8 Talmud Torahs of Chicago will take place on Sunday, November
9 18, 2007; and
 
10     WHEREAS, Rabbi Well is retiring after serving as the
11 Superintendent of the Associated Talmud Torahs for 30 years;
12 his innovative educational and leadership skills have led the
13 Associated Talmud Torahs to succeed and grow as the Central
14 Agency for Torah Education in Chicago; he is a graduate of the
15 Chicago day school system and Roosevelt University; he received
16 his S'micha from the Hebrew Theological College and his PhD
17 from Loyola University; and
 
18     WHEREAS, Rabbi Well has taught at the Jewish University, at
19 Loyola University, and the Ida Crown Jewish Academy; he
20 previously served as Principal at Akiba Schecter Day School and
21 the interim Principal at the Ida Crown Jewish Academy; some of
22 the innovative programs instituted during his tenure include:

1 the Oscar and Bernice Novick P'tach Program for children with
2 learning disabilities, the Associated Talmud Torahs Frankel
3 Teacher's Resource Center, the Goldman Computer Department,
4 and many other programs that serve the entire Jewish Community
5 of Chicago; and
 
6     WHEREAS, Mrs. Vivien Well has been a true partner in all of
7 Rabbi Well's endeavors; she is also an alumna of the Chicago
8 day school system and is an active participant in AMIT, the
9 Skokie mikvah, and the Associated Talmud Torahs; Vivien has
10 taught at P'tach and Arie Crown Hebrew Day School and is
11 currently the graphic artist at the Associated Talmud Torahs
12 Frankel Teacher's Resource Center; Rabbi and Mrs. Well will be
13 honored with the inaugural ATT Jewish Educational Leadership
14 Award; and
 
15     WHEREAS, Mr. Lawrence A. Sherman is the Chairman and
16 founder of Puritan Finance Corporation; he is a life-long
17 supporter of Jewish Education and Jewish causes in Chicago,
18 Israel, and around the world; he is currently on the Board of
19 Overseers of the Hebrew Union College and he has been a leader
20 in Reform Judaism for many years; he served for many years on
21 the Board of Directors of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
22 Chicago, including four years as the Chairman of the Jewish
23 Education Committee; he is a true friend of the Associated
24 Talmud Torahs and is being honored with the Reuben and Francis

1 L. Feinberg Memorial Crown for Community Service in
2 appreciation of his many years of supporting Jewish education;
3 therefore, be it
 
4     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
5 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
6 congratulate Rabbi Well, Mrs. Vivien Well, and Mr. Lawrence
7 Sherman on receiving these great honors; and be it further
 
8     RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution be
9 presented to Rabbi Well, Mrs. Vivien Well, and Mr. Lawrence
10 Sherman as symbols of our respect and esteem.
