HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate Michael Madden on the occasion of his 40th year as Director of the Schaumburg Township District Library; and

WHEREAS, The Schaumburg Township District Library's history begins in 1958, when a committee was organized to investigate the formation of a library; the library opened in 1963 in a house near the corner of Roselle and Schaumburg Road in Schaumburg; in 1965, a new library on Library Lane was opened, with its lower level and Children's Department opening in 1968; in 1976, the library opened its first branch, the Hoffman Estates Branch Library on Hassell Road; the library's second branch, Hanover Park Branch Library, was opened in 1993; the library moved into its current 166,500 square foot building in Town Square in 1998; and

WHEREAS, Prior to his tenure as Director of the Schaumburg Township District Library, Michael Madden worked as a teacher in the Chicago Public Schools from 1961 to 1963; he worked as a teacher and librarian at Ridgewood High School from 1963 until 1965, when he accepted a position as a professional assistant with the American Library Association, working there until 1967, when he was selected to be the Director of the Schaumburg Township District Library; and

WHEREAS, Michael Madden served as an adjunct assistant professor at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at Dominican University from 1983 to 2005; and

WHEREAS, Michael Madden earned his bachelor's degree in English from Marquette University in 1960, his master's degree in English from Loyola University in 1963, and his master's degree in Library Science from the University of Chicago in 1967; and

WHEREAS, Michael Madden is a member of the American Library Association, the Illinois Library Association, and the Rotary Club of Schaumburg/Hoffman Estates; and

WHEREAS, Under the superb leadership of Michael Madden, the Schaumburg Township District Library has developed a reputation of excellence that is worthy of the greatest respect; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate Michael Madden on the occasion of his 40th year as Director of the Schaumburg Township District Library and wish him continued success and happiness in the future; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Michael Madden as a symbol of our esteem and respect.
