HOUSE RESOLUTION

    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3
Representatives are pleased to congratulate the staff of the 
4
Danville Area Community College Reader's Route program on the 
5
occasion of winning a 2007 Governor's Home Town Award for their 
6
efforts to combat adult illiteracy; and

 
7
    WHEREAS, The Governor's Home Town Awards are given each 
8
year by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic 
9
Opportunity to honor volunteer efforts that make a difference 
10
in the community and improve the quality of life for its 
11
residents; and

 
12
    WHEREAS, The Reader's Route program is a part of Danville 
13
Area Community College's adult education division and is funded 
14
by grants from the Illinois Secretary of State's office and the 
15
Illinois Community College Board; and

 
16
    WHEREAS, The Reader's Route program tutors people who are 
17
16 and older, who are not enrolled in a traditional school, 
18
with basic reading and math skills; the program also assists 
19
those who speak with English as a second language, as well as 
20
preparation for obtaining American citizenship and those 
21
taking GED or adult basic education classes at Danville Area 
22
Community College; the program has assisted 3,976 adult

learners since its inception in 1985; and

    WHEREAS, The Reader's Route program has provided an 
3
essential service to those who have had literacy problems and 
4
has enabled them to function within our society as independent 
5
citizens; the program's volunteers are models of selflessness 
6
and generosity to the people of the State of Illinois; 
7
therefore, be it

    RESOLVED, BY THE  HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
9
NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
10
congratulate the staff of the Danville Area Community College 
11
Reader's Route program on the occasion of winning a 2007 
12
Governor's Home Town Award and wish them continued success in 
13
the future; and be it further

    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
15
presented to a representative of the  Danville Area Community 
16
College Reader's Route program as a symbol of our esteem and 
17
respect.
