HOUSE RESOLUTION

    WHEREAS, The Governor's Travel Control Board has 
3
negotiated a State rate for travel on Amtrak by State officials 
4
and employees between Chicago and Springfield, 
5
Bloomington-Normal, Carbondale, Champaign-Urbana, and Macomb; 
6
and

 
7
    WHEREAS, The Governor's Travel Control Board has extended 
8
this State rate for travel on Amtrak to public university 
9
employees as well; and

 
10
    WHEREAS, This State rate has over the years saved taxpayer 
11
money and benefited the development of a vibrant passenger rail 
12
network throughout Illinois by encouraging the use of trains by 
13
those traveling on State and university business; and

 
14
    WHEREAS, There are tens of thousands of students at public 
15
universities who are grappling with the cost of higher 
16
education who regularly travel on corridors served by Amtrak; 
17
and

 
18
    WHEREAS, Thousands of students work at our public 
19
universities in order to pay for tuition; and

    WHEREAS, A negotiated rate for student employees of State

universities for Amtrak travel would encourage more use of 
2
Amtrak and help to make higher education more affordable; 
3
therefore, be it

    RESOLVED, BY THE  HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
5
NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
6
strongly urge the Governor's Travel Control Board to negotiate 
7
with Amtrak for the implementation of a special travel rate for 
8
part-time student employees of State universities between 
9
Chicago and the cities of Bloomington-Normal, Carbondale, 
10
Mattoon, Champaign-Urbana, and Macomb; and be it further

 
11
    RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to 
12
the Governor and the Governor's Travel Control Board.
