HOUSE RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of Representatives are pleased to congratulate Scott Heatherton and the Danville Area Community College literacy program, on receiving a 2007 Governor's Home Town Award; and

WHEREAS, The Reader's Route program, which pairs volunteer reading tutors with adults of varying literacy levels, won the Home Town award earlier this month and was in the running for the top Governor's Cup honor; though Reader's Route didn't win the Governor's Cup, the college received a second place award with just a handful of other programs; and

WHEREAS, The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity Home Town Awards honor community development efforts run by volunteers; the honored programs are given to groups that make a difference in the community while improving residents' quality of life; the awards are given in eight different population categories; and

WHEREAS, The Reader's Route program is open to anyone seeking to enhance their reading or math skills; participants don't need to be current students to qualify for the services; and

WHEREAS, DACC President Alice Jacobs commended the program's achievement; the Reader's Route was created in 1984 as a partnership between the Adult Basic Education Literacy Program and the Danville Public Library; thousands have been served over the last 23 years; approximately 200 adults will have been tutored by 80 to 90 volunteers; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we congratulate the Reader's Route program, coordinator Scott Heatherton, and Danville Area Community College on receiving this award; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Scott Heatherton as a symbol of our respect and esteem.
