HOUSE RESOLUTION

    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3
Representatives are pleased to congratulate David Hedrick who 
4
has announced his retirement as site manager at Lincoln's New 
5
Salem State Historic Site, effective January 31, 2008; and

 
6
    WHEREAS, David Hedrick has worked 29 years at the New Salem 
7
site, which is administered by the Illinois Historic 
8
Preservation Agency; and

 
9
    WHEREAS, David Hedrick is credited with  managing to join 
10
New Salem and the community together to promote tourism; he has 
11
seen many changes, particularly in infrastructure, at the 
12
reconstructed town where Abraham Lincoln lived and worked in 
13
the 1830s; and

 
14
    WHEREAS, A visitors center opened in 1992, and the outdoor 
15
theater and log buildings have seen improvements over the 
16
years; there was an archaeological dig on the site, and a flat 
17
boat replica was reconstructed under his leadership; and

 
18
    WHEREAS,
Programs and special events have been expanded, 
19
and a cooperative relationship has been fostered with Illinois 
20
College in Jacksonville; a volunteer program has been 
21
developed, with volunteers serving in a variety of capacities,

such as costumed interpreters, clerks in the gift shops, 
2
maintenance workers, campground hosts, or at the reception 
3
desk; and

    WHEREAS, Selected as Petersburg's First Citizen in 2004, 
5
David Hedrick serves on the board of directors for the Menard 
6
County Trails and Greenways, Petersburg Chamber of Commerce, 
7
and Menard County Tourism Council, and he is a member of 
8
numerous local clubs and organizations; and
 
9
    WHEREAS, David Hedrick and his wife, Mary, have lived 
10
onsite at New Salem, raising their two children there; they 
11
have  played host to hundreds of hummingbirds and have invited 
12
the public to witness hummingbird banding demonstrations; 
13
therefore, be it

 
14
    RESOLVED, BY THE  HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
15
NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
16
congratulate David Hedrick and wish him continued success in 
17
the future; and be it further

 
18
    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
19
presented to David Hedrick as a symbol of our respect and 
20
esteem.
