HOUSE RESOLUTION

    WHEREAS, The Illinois Chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha 
3
sorority are sponsoring their tenth annual legislative visit to 
4
the State Capitol; and
 

5
    WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., was founded in 
6
1908 as the first sorority established by African-American 
7
college women; in 2008 the Sorority will celebrate the 100th 
8
anniversary of the founding of the national organization; and
 

9
    WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha is an international 
10
organization with over 200,000 undergraduate and alumnae 
11
members; and
 

12
    WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha itself is an organization with a 
13
commitment to promoting education, healthy minds and bodies, 
14
family unity, economic development, political empowerment, 
15
cultural heritage, and the arts; and
 

16
    WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha members who have distinguished 
17
themselves individually include Rosa Parks, Coretta Scott 
18
King, Hazel O'Leary, Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison, Ella 
19
Fitzgerald, Phylicia Rashad, Zina Garrison, Jane Addams, 
20
Marlan Anderson, Margaret Burroughs, Cardiss Collins, Bettiann 
21
Gardner, Marla Gibbs, Gladys Knight, Constance Baker Motley,

Jessye Norman, Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, Alicia Keys, and

    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
5
NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that 
6
the members of this Body, in recognition of the achievements of 
7
the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and the values 
8
for which they strive, do proclaim Wednesday, March 12, 2008, 
9
as the Tenth Annual Alpha Kappa Alpha Day throughout the State 
10
of Illinois; and be it further

    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
12
presented to Linda White, international president of Alpha 
13
Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
