HOUSE RESOLUTION

    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3
Representatives are pleased to congratulate Ethel Boswell 
4
Darden of Chicago on the occasion of her 108th birthday 
5
celebration; and

 
6
    WHEREAS, She was born on February 17, 1900; she served as 
7
Assistant Principal at Howalton Day School, the first 
8
African-American private school in Chicago, from 1947 to 1986; 
9
her birthday celebration has become a Howalton Day School 
10
Reunion each year; and

 
11
    WHEREAS, Some of her former students included the children 
12
of Judge Eugene Pincham, Judge Earl Strayhorn, Professor Timuel 
13
Black, Mayor Eugene Sawyer, and Congressman Ralph Metcalfe; and

 
14
    WHEREAS, She is the oldest living member of Alpha Kappa 
15
Alpha and has life membership status; she is a founding member 
16
of Alpha Xi Omega, founded June 6, 1929 in Dallas, Texas; their 
17
first graduate chapter was the Class of 1921 ; and

 
18
    WHEREAS, She is the oldest living alumni of Wiley College 
19
in Marshall, Texas; and

 
20
    WHEREAS, A birthday celebration will be held on February

    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE

NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we

congratulate Ethel Boswell Darden on this historic occasion and 
6
wish her the best at her birthday celebration; and be it 
7

    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
9
presented to Ethel Boswell Darden as a symbol of our respect 
10
and esteem.
