| HOUSE RESOLUTION
|

| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 |
| Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of
Roberta |
4 |
| Calyen of Chicago, who passed away on February 12, 2008; and
|
5 |
| WHEREAS, Roberta Calyen was born on June 5, 1926 in |
6 |
| Lexington, Mississippi; her parents were Henry Smith and Clara |
7 |
| Raleigh; she married Richard C. Calyen in 1947, and they were |
8 |
| blessed with five children; and
|
9 |
| WHEREAS, Roberta Calyen left the South for Chicago in 1946; |
10 |
| upon arriving in Chicago, she joined and became an active |
11 |
| member of the Mt. Hebron MBC, where she served on the usher |
12 |
| board; she later became a member of the Christian Valley |
13 |
| Baptist Church; and
|
14 |
| WHEREAS, Roberta Calyen worked in the retail field for many |
15 |
| years until her health intervened; and
|
16 |
| WHEREAS, Roberta Calyen enjoyed gardening and socializing |
17 |
| with neighbors and friends on her front porch; and |
18 |
| WHEREAS, Roberta Calyen was preceded in death by her |
19 |
| sisters, Clara Newsome, Azalee Richmond, and Annie Smith; her |
20 |
| brothers, G and Buddy Smith; her children, Shirley Deer and |
|

| Ricky Calyen; and her grandson, Richard Darnell Calyen; and |

| WHEREAS, Roberta Calyen is survived by her brother, Sam |

| Smith; her daughters, Alberta Frencher and Clementine Gilbert |
4 |
| (Melvin); her son, Anthony Calyen; her grandchildren, Henry |
5 |
| Calyen, Derrick Luckie, Reginald, Dennis (Barbara), and Darryl |
6 |
| Deer, April Tolbert (Norvell), Donald Christopher Hardaway, |
7 |
| Anthony Calyen, Yolanda Smith (Marcus), Nicole Payton, Darrius |
8 |
| Calyen, and Brandon and Durran Davis; and her |
9 |
| great-grandchildren, Myiesha, Marcus Jr., and Maurion Smith, |
10 |
| Tony Calyen, Neika, Ranae, and Lexi Payton, Kaleb, Kanaan, and |
11 |
| Trinity Deer, Brittany and Jaykila Hardaway, and Andrew |
12 |
| Tolbert; and |
13 |
| WHEREAS, Roberta Calyen will be remembered by all who knew |
14 |
| and loved her as a faithful, independent, and outspoken wife |
15 |
| and mother with an unwavering faith in God; therefore, be it
|

| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
17 |
| NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
18 |
| mourn, along with her family and friends, the passing of |
19 |
| Roberta Calyen; and be it further
|
20 |
| RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be |
21 |
| presented to the family of Roberta Calyen as an expression of |
22 |
| our sympathy.
