| 2 | WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of | ||||||
| 3 | Representatives are
pleased to recognize milestone | ||||||
| 4 | achievements in high school sports in
the State of Illinois; | ||||||
| 5 | and
| ||||||
| 6 | WHEREAS, The Centralia High School Boys Varsity Basketball | ||||||
| 7 | Team, the
Orphans, won the school's 2,000th game on Friday, | ||||||
| 8 | February 15, 2008 at Mt. Vernon High School with a final score | ||||||
| 9 | of Centralia 45, Mt. Vernon 43; and
| ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, The Orphan team consists of Brandon Buchanan, Evan | ||||||
| 11 | Burmester, Myron Cunningham, Adrian Dabney, Keith Johnson, | ||||||
| 12 | Justin Keef, Ben Kracht, R.J. Kwiatkowski, Mark McConnaughay, | ||||||
| 13 | Jake Prosise, Stile Smith, Devan Wells, and Carlton Westbrook; | ||||||
| 14 | the Head Coach is Lee Bennett; the Assistant Coaches are Brad | ||||||
| 15 | Goewey, Ryan Blaha, and Doug Jack; and the video person is | ||||||
| 16 | DeAndre Williams; and
| ||||||
| 17 | WHEREAS, Centralia Basketball has come a long way in the | ||||||
| 18 | past 102 years;
Centralia High School Basketball started in | ||||||
| 19 | 1906 and was played in
the basement of "B" Building, which had | ||||||
| 20 | a twelve foot high ceiling and
supporting posts on the playing | ||||||
| 21 | floor; in 1922, play was moved to a new gym
which had seating | ||||||
| 22 | only on the west side; in 1936, the current gym, named after
| ||||||
| |||||||
| |||||||
| 1 | legendary coach A.L. Trout, was dedicated; A.L. Trout served as | ||||||
| 2 | coach from 1914
until
1950 and holds the Illinois High School | ||||||
| 3 | Boys Basketball coaching
record of 809 wins at one school; and
| ||||||
| 4 | WHEREAS, The nickname of the "Orphans" came from a comment | ||||||
| 5 | made by a Chicago
sports writer in 1937 at the Pontiac Holiday | ||||||
| 6 | Tournament after the team came out
for warm-ups in bedraggled | ||||||
| 7 | suits and warm-up jackets with no buttons; Coach
Trout liked | ||||||
| 8 | the saying and tagged the club Orphans, a tradition that | ||||||
| 9 | continues
to this day; and
| ||||||
| 10 | WHEREAS, Centralia High School is the second high school in | ||||||
| 11 | the nation and the first in the State of Illinois to reach this | ||||||
| 12 | milestone; therefore, be it
| ||||||
| 13 | RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE | ||||||
| 14 | NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we | ||||||
| 15 | congratulate the Centralia High School Boys Varsity Basketball | ||||||
| 16 | Team on the school's 2,000th win and wish them continued | ||||||
| 17 | success on the courts across Southern Illinois; and be it | ||||||
| 18 | further
| ||||||
| 19 | RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be | ||||||
| 20 | presented to Head Coach Lee Bennett on behalf of the Centralia | ||||||
| 21 | Orphans Basketball Team.
