| HOUSE RESOLUTION

| WHEREAS, The State of Illinois recognizes that the City of |
| 3 |
| Chicago is the United States flagship city for Earth Hour, an |
| 4 |
| initiative of the World Wildlife Fund dedicated to showing that |
| 5 |
| together we can all make a change in global warming by reducing |
| 6 |
| our electric use for one hour; and
|
| 7 |
| WHEREAS, Earth Hour is an event in which the entire State |
| 8 |
| can participate; and
|
| 9 |
| WHEREAS, Iconic buildings in Chicago including the Sears |
| 10 |
| Tower, Wrigley Field, the Merchandise Mart, and the John |
| 11 |
| Hancock Building, as well as businesses and residences around |
| 12 |
| the State, from Aurora to Worth, are participating in Earth |
| 13 |
| Hour; and
|
| 14 |
| WHEREAS, Climate change is perhaps the most significant |
| 15 |
| issue facing our planet today, and the need to respond is |
| 16 |
| unsurpassed; average annual carbon emissions in the United |
| 17 |
| States alone measure 19.6 tons per person; and
|
| 18 |
| WHEREAS, The Earth is beginning to witness dramatic |
| 19 |
| impacts, from melting glaciers to increased intensity and |
| 20 |
| frequency of hurricanes, as a result of the amount of carbon we |
| 21 |
| load into the atmosphere; therefore the way we live and behave |
