| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |

| Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of G. Phil |
| 4 |
| Heckel of Carterville, who passed away on January 28, 2008; and
|
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, G. Phil Heckel was born June 25, 1914, in |
| 6 |
| Carterville, to A.G. and Linda (Alford) Heckel; he married Ruth |
| 7 |
| Stefanoff on August 8, 1939, in Belleville; and
|
| 8 |
| WHEREAS, He honorably served his country in the United |
| 9 |
| States Navy during World War II as a 1st class aviation |
| 10 |
| storekeeper aboard the USS Fortune; he owned and operated |
| 11 |
| Heckel's Department Store for over 50 years, and he owned Crab |
| 12 |
| Orchard Golf Club, which he operated with his son, Steve; he |
| 13 |
| served on the board and was past president of Carterville State |
| 14 |
| and Savings Bank for over 50 years; and
|
| 15 |
| WHEREAS, He was a 50-year member and past president of the |
| 16 |
| Carterville Lions Club and also served on the Williamson County |
| 17 |
| Airport Authority Board for 24 years; he attended SIU and the |
| 18 |
| University of Illinois; he was a staunch supporter of the |
| 19 |
| Carterville School system, John A. Logan College, and Southern |
| 20 |
| Illinois University; he also served on the Carterville School |
| 21 |
| Board and was helpful in getting John A. Logan College |
| 22 |
| established in Carterville; he was a member of the Carterville |
