HOUSE RESOLUTION

    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3
Representatives are pleased to congratulate Jeffrey Arnold on 
4
the occasion of being inducted into the 2008 All-USA Community 
5
College Academic First Team by USA Today; and

 
6
    WHEREAS, Jeffrey Arnold was selected by USA Today as one of 
7
20 members of the All-USA Community College Academic First 
8
Team; students named to the First Team have not only excelled 
9
in academics but have also used their abilities to improve 
10
their campus and/or community; in addition, the students must 
11
write an essay describing an endeavor that they have undertake 
12
for the improvement of their surroundings; for winning this 
13
prestigious designation, he received a trophy and a $2,500 
14
scholarship at the President's Breakfast during the American 
15
Association of Community Colleges convention in Philadelphia; 
16
and

 
17
    WHEREAS, Jeffrey Arnold is studying physics at Parkland 
18
Community College in Champaign, where he has maintained a 4.0 
19
GPA; he is a United States Army veteran and served a year in 
20
Iraq in 2005; he also started a math club and works as a peer 
21
tutor; and

 
22
    WHEREAS, Jeffrey Arnold was honored for his involvement in

a peer tutoring program at Parkland and his involvement in Phi 
2
Theta Kappa activities, including the coordination of campus 
3
involvement in a tutoring program as a way to expose his 
4
classmates to different cultures; today the tutoring program 
5
has 20 to 30 college students serving as tutors to nearly 50 
6
immigrant children every week; and

 
7
    WHEREAS, Jeffrey Arnold also serves as a mentor with Big 
8
Brothers Big Sisters, another testament of his dedication to 
9
serving his community; and

 
10
    WHEREAS, Jeffrey Arnold serves as a model of hard work, 
11
integrity, and dedication for the people of the State of 
12
Illinois; therefore, be it

 
13
    RESOLVED, BY THE  HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
14
NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
15
congratulate Jeffrey Arnold on the occasion of being inducted 
16
into the 2008 All-USA Community College Academic First Team and 
17
wish him continued success and happiness in the future; and be 
18
it further

    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
20
presented to Jeffrey Arnold as a symbol of our esteem and 
21
respect.
