| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 |
| Representatives are pleased to congratulate Carlos Tortolero, |
| 4 |
| President of the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, on |
| 5 |
| being recognized by the Illinois Humanities Council; and
|
| 6 |
| WHEREAS, Carlos Tortolero founded Chicago's National |
| 7 |
| Museum of Mexican Art more than two decades ago to increase |
| 8 |
| understanding and appreciation of Mexican culture; he has |
| 9 |
| dedicated his life to increasing awareness of the culture, |
| 10 |
| starting from his work as a teacher in Chicago Public Schools |
| 11 |
| and as the head of the nationally known museum; and
|
| 12 |
| WHEREAS, The 23-year Berwyn resident will be recognized for |
| 13 |
| his work by the Illinois Humanities Council in May of 2008, |
| 14 |
| with the 2008 Public Humanities Award; and
|
| 15 |
| WHEREAS, Mr. Tortolero has been able to give back to his |
| 16 |
| hometown and the Berwyn and Cicero communities directly through |
| 17 |
| his work with the museum, through the Yollocalli initiative; |
| 18 |
| the effort is an education and career-training program for |
| 19 |
| teenagers and young adults aimed at increasing their |
| 20 |
| understanding of and ability in the arts and offers free |
| 21 |
| classes to Morton High School District 201 students; and
