| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
| 3 |
| Representatives are pleased to congratulate the citizens of |
| 4 |
| Murrayville as they celebrate the sesquicentennial of their |
| 5 |
| community; and
|
| 6 |
| WHEREAS, Murrayville was named after Mr. Samuel Murray; the |
| 7 |
| Murray family came to America in 1835, and after living three |
| 8 |
| years in Pennsylvania came to Illinois, taking five months to |
| 9 |
| make the journey; they settled in Morgan County where |
| 10 |
| Murrayville now stands; and
|
| 11 |
| WHEREAS, Under Mr. Murray's supervision, the town was |
| 12 |
| surveyed and platted out on January 5, 1858; it was at this |
| 13 |
| time that the town was named Murrayville; and
|
| 14 |
| WHEREAS, In 1863, an effort was made to change the name of |
| 15 |
| the town to Itan and it was known by that name for some time, |
| 16 |
| but because it was better known as Murrayville, it went back to |
| 17 |
| that name; and
|
| 18 |
| WHEREAS, The Chicago and Alton Railroad began to operate |
| 19 |
| through the community in 1858, which encouraged the building of |
| 20 |
| more homes and businesses; and
