HOUSE RESOLUTION

    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of  
3
Representatives are pleased to honor Manuel M. Velasco and 
4
Blanca Maria Velasco on the occasion of the Springfield Park 
5
District renaming the tennis area at Washington Park in 
6
Springfield the "Velasco Tennis Center" in honor of their work; 
7
and

 
8
    WHEREAS, Manuel M. Velasco, a native of Bolivia, serves as 
9
the Springfield Park District's racquet sports director and 
10
long-time area tennis coach; he has coached tennis at 
11
Jacksonville High School, MacMurray University, Illinois 
12
College, the Springfield Racquet Club, Springfield College in 
13
Illinois, and the former Sangamon State University; he serves 
14
as head coach at the University of Illinois at Springfield; his 
15
team at UIS has appeared at the NAIA National Tournament 
16
fourteen times; as a player, he won six Bolivian National 
17
Junior Tennis Champion titles and competed at the United States 
18
Open at Forest Hills; and

 
19
    WHEREAS, Blanca Maria Velasco has served as the assistant 
20
manager for tennis programs for the Springfield Park District 
21
and has participated in several community organizations, 
22
including the Girls Scouts of America, the Illinois Prairie 
23
Council, and the Thomas Rees Carillon Board; and

    WHEREAS, Manuel and Blanca Maria Velasco will be formally 
2
honored on July 5, 2008 at a dedication and reception hosted by 
3
the Springfield Park District, the Springfield Parks 
4
Foundation, and the Velasco Tennis Committee; and


 
5
    WHEREAS, Manuel and Blanca Maria Velasco's dedication to 
6
their professions and their willingness to serve the community 
7
make them role models for the people of the State of Illinois, 
8
including several generations of children fondly referred to as 
9
the "Washington Park Rats"; therefore, be it

 
10
    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
11
NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
12
honor Manuel M. Velasco and Blanca Maria Velasco for their 
13
work, congratulate them for the renaming of the tennis center 
14
in their honor, and wish them continued success and happiness 
15
in the future; and be it further

 
16
    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
17
presented to Manuel M. Velasco and Blanca Maria Velasco as a 
18
symbol of our esteem and respect.
