| HOUSE RESOLUTION
|

| WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of |
3 |
| Representatives are saddened to learn of the death of former |
4 |
| State Representative and State Senator Virginia Macdonald of |
5 |
| Arlington Heights, who passed away on July 12, 2008; and
|
6 |
| WHEREAS, Virginia B. Macdonald was born October 24, 1920, |
7 |
| in El Paso, Texas; she attended the University of New Mexico, |
8 |
| where she met her late husband; and
|
9 |
| WHEREAS, She was a volunteer for President Eisenhower's |
10 |
| re-election campaign in 1956 and Richard Nixon's unsuccessful |
11 |
| campaign for the presidency in 1960; she also worked on the |
12 |
| campaigns of Senator Dirksen and Senator Percy; and
|
13 |
| WHEREAS, She was a founding member of St. Simon's Episcopal |
14 |
| Church in Arlington Heights; and she was involved in the Girl |
15 |
| Scouts; and
|
16 |
| WHEREAS, She served in the Illinois House from 1973 to |
17 |
| 1983, and the Illinois Senate from 1983 to 1994, representing |
18 |
| District 27; she was very active in Illinois politics for more |
19 |
| than 40 years and served as delegate to the Illinois |
20 |
| Constitutional Convention from 1969 to 1970; she was the only |
21 |
| woman who served as a member of the Bill of Rights Committee |

| that created the State's Equal Rights provision at the Sixth |
2 |
| Illinois Constitutional Convention; and
|
3 |
| WHEREAS, Her legislative accomplishments include laws |
4 |
| requiring hospitals to safely dispose of nonradioactive |
5 |
| medical waste and reimbursement for reconstructive breast |
6 |
| surgery; she also sponsored bills that brought Lake Michigan |
7 |
| water to the Northwest suburbs of Chicago, decentralized the |
8 |
| State's juvenile court system, broadened the State's rape law |
9 |
| to include the charge of sexual assault, and created property |
10 |
| tax caps for suburban Cook County; and |
11 |
| WHEREAS, She was the beloved wife of the late Alan H. |
12 |
| Macdonald; the loving mother of Susan (John) Van Bramer and |
13 |
| Alan H. Macdonald Jr.; the cherished grandmother of Rebecca, |
14 |
| Diana, Michael, and Joseph Van Bramer and Michelle |
15 |
| (Christopher) Smudde; and the dear sister of the late Richard |
16 |
| and Hendrix Blue; therefore, be it

| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
18 |
| NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
19 |
| mourn, along with her family, friends, and community, the |
20 |
| passing of former State legislator Virginia Macdonald; and be |
21 |
| it further
