HOUSE RESOLUTION

    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3
Representatives are pleased to recognize milestones in the 
4
State of Illinois; and

 
5
    WHEREAS, On Friday, August 15, 2008, the Urban Health 
6
Program will host a dinner to launch the 30th Anniversary 
7
Campaign of the Urban Health Program (UHP) which will be held 
8
at the Oak Brook Hills, Marriott Resort in Oak Brook; and

 
9
    WHEREAS, In 1978, the Illinois State Legislature 
10
recommended that the University of Illinois at Chicago, College 
11
of Medicine design a program tailored to recruit 
12
underrepresented populations to the world of medicine; and

 
13
    WHEREAS, House Resolution 944 expanded educational 
14
opportunities in the health professions which provided access 
15
and support for 100 physicians seeking students per year; the 
16
goal of HR944 was to provide recruitment priorities to 
17
low-income, inner city minority students; and

 
18
    WHEREAS, Thirty years later the Urban Health Program has 
19
graduated thousands of Medical Doctors and national statistics 
20
note that the program at UIC graduates more Black, Latino, and 
21
Native American health professionals than any other

institutions in the country, other than a few select, 
2
historically Black universities; and

 
3
    WHEREAS, This event is just the starting point to recognize 
4
the 30 years of service that UHP has provided to students of 
5
color in the health professions; the campaign theme, 
6
"Developing Our Future, Connecting our Past: Improving Life One 
7
Person at a Time", will resonate throughout all of the 
8
program's  activities during the 2009 calendar year; therefore, 
9
be it

    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
11
NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
12
congratulate all the people who have been involved over the 
13
years with the Urban Health Program and wish them the best as 
14
they celebrate this special anniversary; and be it further

 
15
    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
16
presented to the 30th Anniversary Committee for the Urban 
17
Health Program as a symbol of our respect.
