HOUSE RESOLUTION

    WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of 
3
Representatives are pleased to congratulate Manhattan Fire 
4
Chief John "Jack" Fitzgerald on his retirement from the 
5
Manhattan Fire Department; and

 
6
    WHEREAS, He joined the Manhattan Fire Department on January 
7
13, 1956; in 1967 he was promoted to Assistant Chief and became 
8
Mayor of Manhattan that same year, serving as Mayor until 1989 
9
and becoming the longest-serving Mayor of Manhattan; and

 
10
    WHEREAS, He was promoted to Deputy Chief in 1992 and Chief 
11
in 1998; and

 
12
    WHEREAS, He became an Illinois State Certified Firefighter 
13
II in 1984, an  Illinois State Certified Firefighter III in 
14
1993; and was an Illinois State Certified Paramedic from 1976 
15
to 2006; and

 
16
    WHEREAS, He was the recipient of the Officer of the Year 
17
Award from the Manhattan Fire Department in 1974, 1983, and 
18
1992; he was the recipient of the EMS Award from the Manhattan 
19
Fire Department in 1992; he was the recipient of the Paramedic 
20
of the Year Award from the Will Grundy EMS System in 1987; and 
21
he was the recipient of the Dr. William McConnell Excellence in

EMS Award in 2006; and

    WHEREAS, Jack Fitzgerald and Judith Briese were married on 
3
November 29, 1958; they are the proud parents of Lynn (Danny) 
4
Chellios, Karen (Steve) Chellios, Kelly Patterson, Jacki 
5
(Patrick) Reilly, and John Fitzgerald; therefore, be it

 
6
    RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE 
7
NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we 
8
congratulate John "Jack" Fitzgerald on his retirement and wish 
9
him and his lovely wife a happy 50th wedding anniversary; and 
10
be it further

    RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be 
12
presented to John "Jack" Fitzgerald as a symbol of our respect 
13
and esteem.
