HOUSE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois House of
3 Representatives are pleased to designate days in the State of
4 Illinois to help our citizens learn more about pressing issues
5 that effect the State; and
 
6     WHEREAS, October 27, 2008 is the first day of Red Ribbon
7 Week, the flagship awareness initiative of the National Family
8 Partnership's Red Ribbon Campaign, the oldest and largest drug
9 prevention program in the nation; and
 
10     WHEREAS, "Lock Your Meds Day" is a targeted call to action
11 for parents, asking them to take a five-part pledge to prevent
12 children's prescription drug abuse; and
 
13     WHEREAS, "Lock Your Meds Day" encourages parents to talk to
14 their children about the dangers of taking medications without
15 a prescription, setting clear rules about not sharing medicine
16 and using medication only as prescribed, locking up medicine to
17 prevent children and guests from accessing it, taking stock of
18 our medicine and regularly checking to see that nothing is
19 missing, and encouraging family and friends to follow the same
20 guidelines to keep children safe from prescription drugs; and
 
21     WHEREAS, Statistics show that more than 3.1 million teens

1 report abusing prescription drugs; everyday, 3,300 more
2 children begin experimenting with prescription drugs; and 70%
3 of children who abuse prescription drugs admit to getting them
4 from family or friends; therefore, be it
 
5     RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE
6 NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we
7 designate October 27, 2008 as "Lock Your Meds Day" in the State
8 of Illinois; and be it further
 
9     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
10 presented to the National Family Partnership as a symbol of our
11 respect.
