| HOUSE RESOLUTION
|

| WHEREAS, LifeSavers is a peer-support, suicide, and |
| 3 |
| crisis-prevention program developed to train young adults to be |
| 4 |
| caring listeners in their interactions with their peers; and
|
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, The LifeSavers program trains selected students |
| 6 |
| from 9th through 12th grades to be skilled listeners who can |
| 7 |
| responsibly help other students deal with the emotional crises |
| 8 |
| of adolescence; over two thousand ninth through twelfth graders |
| 9 |
| from schools throughout Southern Illinois have participated in |
| 10 |
| annual three-day training retreats in which trainees gain a |
| 11 |
| better understanding of the teenage concerns which can lead to |
| 12 |
| a real crisis; the trainees also learn how to listen with |
| 13 |
| caring and respect to their troubled peers and how to recognize |
| 14 |
| symptoms of an impending crisis; and
|
| 15 |
| WHEREAS, The LifeSavers program involves a team approach to |
| 16 |
| helping teenagers cope healthfully with the challenges of drugs |
| 17 |
| and alcohol, peer and family relationships, sexual issues, |
| 18 |
| violence, academic problems, death and grieving, aggression, |
| 19 |
| anxiety, and suicide; LifeSavers are also trained to recognize |
| 20 |
| when a peer's problem is beyond their abilities and to know |
| 21 |
| what resources are available to refer peers to for the |
| 22 |
| appropriate help; and

| WHEREAS, LifeSavers is often the first line of defense for |
| 2 |
| high school communities, due to the utilization of the greatest |
| 3 |
| assets in helping young people - the young people themselves; |
| 4 |
| and
|
| 5 |
| WHEREAS, The LifeSavers program has been established in |
| 6 |
| many locations in Illinois, including Alton, Benton, Cahokia, |
| 7 |
| Carbondale (the program's original chapter), Carrier |
| 8 |
| Mills-Stonefort, Carterville, Chester, Egyptian, Eldorado, |
| 9 |
| Elverado, Galatia, Gallatin County, Herrin, Highland, Johnston |
| 10 |
| City, O'Fallon, Marion, Murphysboro, Mt. Vernon, Nashville, |
| 11 |
| Norris City-Omaha-Enfield, Pinckneyville, Sparta, Steeleville, |
| 12 |
| Trico, Waterloo, Wesclin, and West Frankfort; and |
| 13 |
| WHEREAS, The LifeSavers program has proven to be a vital |
| 14 |
| asset within the State of Illinois, providing crucial |
| 15 |
| assistance to those teenagers who most need a kind person to |
| 16 |
| listen to their problems and to help them when necessary; |
| 17 |
| therefore, be it

| RESOLVED, BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE |
| 19 |
| NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we |
| 20 |
| honor the members of the LifeSavers Training Corporation for |
| 21 |
| their work in helping the young adults of this State and wish |
| 22 |
| them continued success and happiness in the future; and be it |
