SYNOPSIS AS INTRODUCED:
 
105 ILCS 5/27-17   from Ch. 122, par. 27-17

    Amends the Courses of Study - Special Instruction Article of the School Code. Provides that the curriculum in all State universities shall contain instruction in safety education for teachers (rather than an elective course of instruction in safety education for teachers, comprising at least 48 fifty-minute periods or the equivalent thereof) and that this instruction may be by specific courses in safety education or may be incorporated in existing subjects taught in the university. Effective immediately.

1     AN ACT concerning education.
 
2     Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
3 represented in the General Assembly:
 
4     Section 5. The School Code is amended by changing Section
5 27-17 as follows:
 
6     (105 ILCS 5/27-17)  (from Ch. 122, par. 27-17)
7     Sec. 27-17. Safety education. School boards of public
8 schools and all boards in charge of educational institutions
9 supported wholly or partially by the State may provide
10 instruction in safety education in all grades and include such
11 instruction in the courses of study regularly taught therein.
12     In this section "safety education" means and includes
13 instruction in the following:
14     1. automobile safety, including traffic regulations and
15 highway safety;
16     2. safety in the home;
17     3. safety in connection with recreational activities;
18     4. safety in and around school buildings;
19     5. safety in connection with vocational work or training;
20 and
21     6. cardio-pulmonary resuscitation for pupils enrolled in
22 grades 9 through 11.
23     Such boards may make suitable provisions in the schools and

1 institutions under their jurisdiction for instruction in
2 safety education for not less than 16 hours during each school
3 year.
4     The curriculum in all State universities shall contain an
5 elective course of instruction in safety education for
6 teachers, comprising at least 48 fifty-minute periods or the
7 equivalent thereof. This instruction may be by specific courses
8 in safety education or may be incorporated in existing subjects
9 taught in the university.
