Amends the School Code. Allows school boards to award high school diplomas to honorably discharged veterans who served in the armed forces of the United States during the Vietnam Conflict. Effective immediately.

| AN ACT concerning education.
|

| Be it enacted by the People of the State of Illinois,
|
3 |
| represented in the General Assembly:
|

| Section 5. The School Code is amended by changing Section |
5 |
| 22-27 as follows:
|

| (105 ILCS 5/22-27)
|
7 |
| Sec. 22-27. World War II , and Korean Conflict , and Vietnam |
8 |
| Conflict veterans; diplomas.
|
9 |
| (a) Upon request, the school board of any district that |
10 |
| maintains
grades 10 through 12 may award a diploma to any |
11 |
| honorably discharged veteran
who:
|
12 |
| (1) served in the armed forces of the United States |
13 |
| during World War II ,
or the Korean Conflict , or the Vietnam |
14 |
| Conflict ;
|
15 |
| (2) resided within an area currently within the |
16 |
| district;
|
17 |
| (3) left high school before graduating in order to |
18 |
| serve in the armed
forces of the United States; and
|
19 |
| (4) has not received a high school diploma.
|

| (b) The State Board of Education and the Department of |
21 |
| Veterans' Affairs
may issue rules consistent with the |
22 |
| provisions of this Section that are
necessary to implement this |
23 |
| Section.
