SENATE RESOLUTION

 
2     WHEREAS, The members of the Illinois Senate are saddened to
3 learn of the death of Benedict "Ben" Brocato of Berwyn, who
4 passed away on March 8, 2007; and
 
5     WHEREAS, Mr. Brocato, an alderman in the 5th Ward since
6 1997, was the longest-serving current alderman in Berwyn; and
 
7     WHEREAS, At the age of 13, Mr. Brocato and his family moved
8 from Italy to the Chicago area; after graduating from high
9 school, he received a manufacturing engineering degree from
10 Chicago Technical College; Mr. Brocato worked for various
11 manufacturers, first as a manufacturing engineer, then in
12 sales; in 1992 he combined his knowledge of both fields and
13 started his own business, Brodic Machine Tool Sales Inc., in
14 Berwyn; and
 
15     WHEREAS, Shortly after he and his wife, Maureen, bought
16 their home in 1970, he became involved in the community, first
17 in his son's school in District 98 as well as with Cub Scouts,
18 PTA, and band parents; and
 
19     WHEREAS, In 1997, at the prompting of friends, he ran for
20 alderman and won and later was re-elected twice; Mr. Brocato
21 was chairman of the city's Fire and Police Committee, Public

1 Works Committee, and was recently appointed chairman of the
2 Education Committee; he helped spearhead a parental
3 responsibility ordinance, which holds parents liable for the
4 actions of their children, and he helped to launch many of the
5 city's senior citizen programs, from the senior bus to the
6 advocate program; Mr. Brocato was a member of the Roosevelt
7 Road Business Association; he was a volunteer for the West
8 Suburban United Way and the Italian-American Civic
9 Organization of Berwyn; and he was a senior member of the
10 Society of Manufacturing Engineers and the American Machine
11 Tool Distributors of America; and
 
12     WHEREAS, Bendedict "Ben" Brocato is survived by his wife of
13 41 years, Maureen; his son, Joseph; his mother, Francesca; his
14 sisters and a brother in Italy; and his four grandchildren;
15 therefore, be it
 
16     RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE NINETY-FIFTH GENERAL
17 ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF ILLINOIS, that we mourn, along with
18 his family and friends, the passing of Benedict "Ben" Brocato;
19 and be it further
 
20     RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
21 presented to the family of Benedict "Ben" Brocato as a symbol
22 of our sympathy.
